Mission, Kansas

"I am a clay geek. I love clay...the touch, the smell, the making and the finished product," says Susan Speck. Having grown up in a family of painters and illustrators, wood carvers and furniture makers, mechanics and quilt makers, it seems only fitting that Susan should also create with her hands. She has been working with clay for more than thirty years. Drawing on the influences of her mother and grandmother, both of whom worked with fabric, Susan cuts and pieces her vessels like a three-dimensional quilt. After cutting, decorating and forming the pieces, colored slips and glazes are applied to emphasize the stamped patterns before and after bisque firing. Generally beginning with a small teapot, Susan works toward a large series of functional teapots and serving pieces. All pots are finished with food safe glazes.
