Gunilla Murphy has been a long time Bluestem artist. The summer of 2017 she became a partner. She has always enjoyed the fiber arts including knitting and sewing, but weaving holds a special place in her heart. Gunilla grew up in Sweden. Her childhood home was filled with beautiful textiles produced by her great aunt. During her career as a dentist, weaving was an important hobby and an outlet for her love of color and textiles. Gunilla's teacher and mentor is Barbara Overby, one of Bluestem's founding partners. She has also been a member of the Columbia Weavers and Spinners' Guild for many years.
Household linens, including towels, placemats and napkins are items that Gunilla particularly enjoys weaving. "I want people to be able to enjoy beautiful things in their everyday life." All of her household linens are woven from colorfast cottons, linens and rayon. The items are machine washed and dried to make sure they stand up to regular use. Once home, machine wash at warm temperature and dry on the lowest heat setting. If you care to iron your items, a cotton setting is usually appropriate. All items come with care instructions.
No two items are exactly alike. Gunilla typically makes towels in batches of eight. All eight in the group will have the same basic color scheme, but there will be variations. On occasion she will make table runners and sometimes scarves and shawls.
